The hypothesis of his appointment to health has already circulated several times, during previous reshuffles, it is confirmed this time. Horizons MP Frédéric Valletoux, 57, was appointed, Thursday February 8, Minister Delegate in charge of health and prevention. He will support Catherine Vautrin, who inherited, on January 11, within the government formed by Gabriel Attal, a vast scope covering health, but also work and solidarity.

The appointment of Mr. Valletoux comes in a period of uncertainty, avenue de Ségur, following the resignation, in December, of Aurélien Rousseau, opposed to the law concerning immigration, followed by the turbulent interim of Agnès Firmin Le Bodo , who is the subject of a legal investigation for having received, as a pharmacist, gifts from Urgo laboratories.
It is on a political profile that Gabriel Attal and Emmanuel Macron agreed, at a time of strong turbulence in the health sector. Mayor of Fontainebleau (Seine-et-Marne) for more than fifteen years (2005-2022), former regional councilor of Ile-de-France, president of the French Hospital Federation, the lobby of public hospitals, during the last decade until 2022… This center-right parliamentarian, elected to the National Assembly in 2022, is in no way a beginner or a « invisible »to use the epithet often attached to ministers who “do not print” enough.
Former journalist
Unlike some of his predecessors, such as François Braun, Olivier Véran or Agnès Buzyn, Mr. Valletoux is not a doctor. This father of five children worked as a journalist for fifteen years The Municipalities Gazettethen to the newspaper The echoes. After being elected mayor under the UMP label, then Les Républicains (LR), he joined the Agir party, founded by former LR Franck Riester, then that of Edouard Philippe, Horizons, as a deputy. He thus won the presidential majority, following a political career largely on the right.
Well identified by health stakeholders, it is already eagerly awaited, at a time when backlogs are piling up. On the “doubly” medical deductibles and “regularization” foreign doctors, the Head of State, Emmanuel Macron, has already indicated the course, during his televised intervention on January 16.

In the short term, the new Minister of Health will have to carry out the promised end-of-life reform and the thorny overhaul of state medical aid. Not to mention the hospital crisis which continues and the medical deserts which are worsening in many territories.
