Despite massively disrupted preparation, Alexander Schmid still has every chance of a top placement in the World Cup giant slalom in Bansko. The 29-year-old from Allgäu, who has recently been struggling with health problems, is in a good ninth place before the final.
After a decent performance on the difficult and exhausting route, Schmid is 1.25 seconds behind Odermatt, who is on the verge of his tenth win of the season. Parallel world champion Schmid is separated from the “Stockerl” by 0.78 seconds.
“I noticed that I didn’t have quite as much power and liveliness down there anymore,” he said on ARD. “On the whole,” he was still “quite satisfied, it was a solid performance.”
He “got in well,” added Schmid, “on the steep slope it was a little smoother than expected.” The organizer had watered the previously “aggressive” slope overnight, which is why it appeared significantly icier than the day before, he reported.
