One of the most anticipated victories in the current edition of the Tour Colombia, on par with those of Nairo Quintana or Egan Bernal, finally occurred this Friday. Mark Cavendish, one of the best sprinters in world cycling history, crowned the victory in the fourth stage of the country’s most important race in Zipaquirá.

The Briton won his, surpassing his main rivals – among them, Fernando Gaviria – in the final sprint with which the day was defined.

Cavendish passed just in front of Fernando Gaviria, who barely smiled when faced with the power of the European rider when he crossed the finish line. The image of the two packers will remain for the eternal memory of those passionate regarding this sport.

With this victory, Mark Cavendish, one of the great names of the race, added his first official victory in Colombia, where he has been since the beginning of this year preparing the Tour de France, a race in which he aspires to become, alone, the runner with the most wins in history. Currently, he holds the record alongside the legendary Eddy Merckx.

How was the general classification of the Tour Colombia 2024?

With the victory of Mark Cavendish, the general classification did not have major changes. At the top, as leader, is Rodrigo Contreras, who had been in that privileged position since last Thursday when he won the third stage in Tunja.

He is closely followed by Harold Tejada and Andrea Piccolo, the two runners who complete the top-3. Óscar Sevilla, who was second, had to retire from the race following a serious fall at the end of the circuit in the capital of Boyacá last Thursday.

Among the favorites, the best placed is the Ecuadorian Jonathan Caicedo who is ninth. He is followed, in the tenth box, by Egan Bernal. Rigoberto Urán did not have the best day and left the top-10, while Aldemar Reyes, one of the great figures at the national level, rose to fifth place.

What will the fifth day be like, the queen stage of the Tour Colombia?

This Saturday the most attractive stage of the race will be run, the one that might define the champion of the competition while waiting for what happens on Sunday in the last stage of the Tour Colombia that will be run in Bogotá.

The fifth section leaves Cota and ends at Alto del Vino, a mountain pass out of category, following 138 kilometers of travel.
