On Thursday, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg detailed the charges filed once morest seven of them over the incident.
“She looks like Betty, the ugly one,” says Yohenry before the altercation
In the images from the body camera of one of the officers, it is observed how at 8:32 on the night of January 27, the two police officers approach a group of immigrants who were on the sidewalk outside the shelter set up in the Candler building.
In a mix of Spanish and English, the police officer asked the group to leave the area towards the other entrance to the shelter located on the back street.
“Hey, please, how are we? (go to the street) West 41, West 41,” he repeats to her.
The officer approaches Yohenry, who is dressed in a yellow jacket and cap and who is standing on the sidewalk.
“Don’t touch me, don’t touch me,” the subject tells the agent.
Most of the young people begin to walk towards the corner, while singing verses of the song “Lukeando” by Hades66, which alludes to a murder.
While they are walking, Yohenry Brito approaches a stroller that one of the subjects who was in the group was carrying and, looking at his companions, he shouts out loud, “She looks like Ugly Betty,” alluding to the famous Colombian soap opera.
At that moment, the police officer escorting him puts him once morest a wall.
“Why are you stopping me? I told the little guy, it was for the child,” he tells the agent, trying to make it clear that it was not a hint.
Yohenry’s companions, accused of participating in the beating, approach and begin recording with their phones.
At that moment the altercation breaks out.
After the attack, the alleged suspects fled the scene and the police officers got up and began to ask for reinforcements and go in search of them.
Police have charged 7 of the 11 suspects.
“The assault sickened me,” says prosecutor Alvin Bragg
