The contract of Markus Hinterhäuser, who has been appointed director of the Salzburg Festival since 2016, runs until September 2026. The festival has now advertised the artistic direction for the period following that. The board of trustees is looking for a director “for a maximum of five years,” as they say. Applications are possible until March 4th. It is still unclear whether incumbent Markus Hinterhäuser will apply once more. He said recently that he was thinking regarding it.

The requirements for the new director were defined as follows: well-founded experience in the artistic management of a cultural organization of comparable size and complexity, experience in program design based on an independent overall artistic concept, knowledge of Austrian and international cultural life and its organizational environment, ideally familiar with the specific constellations of the Salzburg Festival and the “ability to design innovative and creative programs”. “Social competence, strong communication skills, assertiveness and implementation skills, determination, negotiation skills and knowledge of foreign languages” are also required.

The director is a member of the board of directors and “responsible, in agreement with the other members, for managing the business of the Salzburg Festival Fund in accordance with the rules of procedure in artistic, commercial and organizational terms,” it says in the advertisement.
