Inflation : More than one in three Europeans say they “eat less than in the past”
Inflation “seems to be felt more strongly” by residents of southern European countries, notably Portugal, Italy and Spain, and remains the number one concern for Europeans, a study has found.
Inflation “seems to be felt more strongly” by residents of southern European countries, notably Portugal, Italy and Spain, and remains the primary concern of Europeans, according to a study carried out in ten countries by the Cetelem observatory of the French bank BNP Paribas. “In Portugal, Italy and Spain”, Europeans “respectively 81%, 65% and 65% judge that prices have “strongly increased”, indicates this observatory, in a press release published Monday.
The perception of inflation is something different from inflation as such. What is measured is consumers’ feeling that their purchasing power is declining. They sometimes have the feeling that it is going backwards without this actually being the case, in particular due to the increasing increase in expenses that have been imposed for many years, such as the cost of housing.
Less food waste
“Even if inflation is lower than a year ago, it remains a major concern for all Europeans: for 87% of them, it is the most important concern given the international geopolitical situation (83%),” notes the observatory. This survey was carried out by Harris Interactive in November 2023 in Germany, Belgium, Spain, France, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania, United Kingdom and Sweden, among 10,389 people aged 18 to 75, from national samples representative according to the quota method.
83% of those questioned say they have reduced food waste, a trend that is even more marked in France (87%). In addition, more than one in three Europeans (35%) say they “eat less than in the past”. The percentage is higher in France, where it reaches 41%.
