Rising Temperatures and Flesh-Eating Bacteria: The Impact on East Coast States in 2023

American scientists were interested in serious infections caused by flesh-eating bacteria which would have developed following the heat waves that occurred in the summer of 2023.

After these heat waves, three states on the east coast of the United States saw an increase in these serious infections, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

This report concerns a deadly bacterial species, Vibrio injuriouswhich can be found in coastal waters, detailed the journal “Live Science”.

“Flesh-eating” infection, also called necrotizing fasciitis, occurs when the bacteria enters an open wound. This serious infection causes rapid death of surrounding tissues.

This bacteria, if swallowed through food, can cause gastrointestinal infections, with symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting and fever, but can also cause cases of septicemia.

Vibrio injurious develops in warm waters and between June and August 2023, the United States experienced heat waves greater than normal, causing water surface temperatures also above average, detailed the scientific media .

Just following these heat waves, Connecticut, New York and North Carolina reported several severe cases of necrotizing fasciitis, for a total of 11 cases.

Although these cases cannot only be linked to rising temperatures, the link between this infection and these environmental conditions is well documented, the report added.
