Imran Khan Convicted: Latest Updates on Former Prime Minister’s Legal Troubles

Islamabad: Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan has suffered another blow. In 2018, Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Khan were sentenced to seven years in prison for marrying in violation of Islamic law. This is also the third adverse conviction once morest the former prime minister.

The court held that Bushra Khan married Imran without completing the waiting period mandated by Islam, called ‘iddat, following divorcing her ex-husband.

The court noted that the nikah between Imran Khan and Bushra took place in a secret ceremony in January 2018, seven months before he became prime minister.

There was a dispute over whether the two were married before the term was completed. But both responded that they have not done anything wrong.

Meanwhile, the court sentenced Imran Khan to 10 years in the case of leaking government secrets. The conviction under the Secrets Act comes as Pakistan’s general elections are regarding to take place. Former foreign minister and Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) vice-chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi was also sentenced to 10 years in prison by a special court.

Imran Khan, who was ousted from the post of Prime Minister in 2022, was convicted in a corruption case and is currently in jail for two years.

Pakistan’s general election will be held on February 8 amid allegations that the authorities are preventing Imran Khan’s party PTI from campaigning. Imran Khan is fighting a legal battle in several other cases.
