High-Speed Chase and Legal Consequences: The Story of Vincent, the Reckless Driver

Behind a wheel, Vincent (not his real name) can sometimes lose control. Annoying when you’re a delivery driver. He appeared this Friday for two separate scenes.

On June 3, 2022, he left the road while driving his vehicle. The only person involved, he left his car on the road and returned home on foot to Namur, to get warm in his bed. When the police, who quickly found him thanks to his license plate, knocked on his door, he was sleeping. He got angry when they asked him for his identity card, names were thrown around and he was deprived of his liberty. Which earned him a rebellion prevention. Questioned on this subject by President Bourgeois, he claimed “not to remember the facts well” and specified that he was not under the influence. The police, for their part, were arrested by the smell of alcohol. Vincent apologizes and speaks of a “blood attack”.

The second scene, a nasty obstruction of traffic, took place while he was traveling on the E411 near Éghezée, in November 2022. He was returning from work and traveling at more than 140 km/h. He overtook an unmarked police car. The officers asked him to get off the highway. Which he did, before speeding off once more. Vincent did not hesitate to drive at nearly 170 km/h on a road limited to 70, between the Champion exit and the Namur CHR. Crossing the white line, overtaking to the right, he seemed ready to do anything to leave the police behind. “I was scared because the vehicle was not insured and I had no registration.”

At the time of committing these acts, Vincent had only one driving history. He has since had five more. Which leads the substitute Vandermeiren to request once morest him a prison sentence of one year and a disqualification from driving for one month for the chase, a prison sentence of three months and a fine of €50 for rebellion and a €200 fine and 15 days of license withdrawal for lack of registration and insurance.

A work sentence is pleaded by the defense, who asks the court not to pronounce a forfeiture of the right to drive, given the profession of the defendant.
