• The Generation Superheroes campaign benefited 10 children with the absence of one of their senior members.
• Emmanuel Bornachera, an 11-year-old Vallenato, was one of the beneficiaries.
• This action was born within the framework of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Coomeva Prepaid Medicine.
Cali, February 2024. Emmanuel Bornachera is part of the group of three girls and seven boys between 3 and 16 years old who have received an upper limb prosthesis thanks to Generación Superhéroes, a social campaign promoted by Coomeva Medicina Prepagada. The beneficiaries were selected from hundreds of children who, due to birth or some trauma, lack one of their upper limbs. They all come from different regions of Colombia and had been on the waiting list for several months at Fabrilab, a non-profit entity that is an expert in the development of prosthetic devices and rehabilitation, which was an ally in this entire process.
Emmanuel Bornachera is from Valledupar, he is 11 years old and was born with malformations in his arms: the right one ends shortly following the shoulder and the left one shows a special little hand with only two fingers. “He spent his first year of life admitted to a hospital,” says Efraín, his father, “and he needed 7 major surgeries. We came to think that he would not make it, but we thank God for being able to have him with us.”
Despite his condition, Emmanuel is a very active child: he likes to play soccer and really enjoys physical education and art classes. He also likes music, like a good vallenato, and he even has a private singing teacher since he was very little because he almost started singing before speaking. In fact, he is regarding to release a musical work with which he hopes to start a long career as a soloist. With the new prosthesis received, Emmanuel will be able to have more independence and, above all, feel more comfortable when he appears in public.
Thanks to the Generation Superheroes campaign of Coomeva Prepaid Medicine, the little vallenato has been able to access an electronic prosthesis designed by Colombian talent. It is a transhumeral device with a mechanical elbow and electronic hand that works with voice control. To manufacture it, a case evaluation was first carried out by physiatrists, occupational therapists and experts in orthotics and prosthetics. With this, the prosthesis was manufactured and left ready for the final process: painting and decorating it in a personalized way according to the user’s own instructions. In this case, the final design has lights and is inspired by Emmanuel’s favorite superhero.
The prosthesis was delivered in Bogotá at the Coomeva Medicina Prepagada Torre 102 Medical Center by Dr. Carlos Mario González, manager of the company’s central-eastern regional office. “This action is part of Generación Superhéroes, a social campaign that we created on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Coomeva Medicina Prepagada. There is no better way to celebrate than by helping new generations achieve their dreams. We thank Emmanuel’s family for placing his trust in us and we wish him much success in his musical career.”
