The prisoner escaped from the Brothers of Mercy Hospital in the second district during a hospital appointment. The man is said to be an internationally wanted serious criminal. The escape was apparently made possible by misconduct on the part of the prison guards.
A prisoner escaped from the Brothers of Mercy Hospital in Vienna-Leopoldstadt during a hospital appointment on Friday at lunchtime. This was apparently possible because of misconduct by officials. The escapee is an inmate from the Wiener Neustadt prison (JA) who was “parked” at the Josefstadt correctional institution due to a European arrest warrant.
Looking for service dogs, Wega and standby units
According to recent information that has not yet been officially confirmed, the man is said to be in custody on suspicion of terrorism. Before that, he had apparently already been in prison for robbery and assault. The police are already searching for him with a large contingent of forces from the emergency response unit, the service dog department and WEGA.
In a statement, the Ministry of Justice spoke of evidence of “official misconduct by individual employees”. “The final assessment and any associated disciplinary steps remain subject to the results of the precise internal review that has already been initiated,” it continued. The ministry emphasized that the search was initiated immediately.
Prison guard injured
According to “Today”, a prison guard was also said to have been injured. According to the report, the man is said to be a serious criminal. Further reports regarding a possible terrorist background for the man have not yet been confirmed. The Ministry of Justice has so far left several inquiries unanswered.
It was only in November that there were a series of escape attempts in Vienna and Lower Austria as part of escorts to medical appointments. In four out of five cases, the escaped prisoners were re-arrested by the police. A 35-year-old inmate at Stein Prison, however, is still on the run. The ministry responded with 21 raids on institutions and tightening security measures. (APA)
