A scientist has ranked the healthiest foods in the world. And surprise: the healthiest fruit is surprisingly far behind in the ranking.

It’s a fact: fruits are good for your health. But have you ever wondered which of the many types available is the healthiest? A study looked into this question and came to a surprising conclusion.

An English proverb says: “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. And why not orange or kiwi? After all, they’re packed with vitamins, right? Generally speaking, it is not always easy to qualify foods as “more” or “less” healthy. Indeed, not everyone reacts the same way to each food. What may be healthy for one person may trigger stomach aches, allergies or other problems in another.

Lemon: extremely healthy

On the other hand, if we consider the nutrients they contain, it is entirely possible to classify foods on the basis of these elements. American researcher Jennifer Di Noia focused on 17 nutrients, including vitamins A, B12 and dietary fiber. She related them to calorie counts and looked at 41 different foods to come up with a ranking. Needless to say straight away: no fruit managed to rise to the top positions, these being all occupied by vegetables!

Lemon is the healthiest fruit in the world and ranks 28th in the ranking following various kinds of vegetables and salads.

You have to wait until 28th place in the ranking to see the first fruit appear: the lemon. It has the highest number of nutrients in relation to the number of calories and is therefore, according to the study, the healthiest fruit in the world. The strawberry comes in 30th place and the orange in 33rd. If you’re looking for the classics like banana or apple, you won’t find them on the list. This does not mean that these fruits are bad for your health, they were simply not included in the study because of their caloric density.

According to the study, watercress is the healthiest food in the world.

And do you know who is in first place? These are not the famous broccoli or spinach. It’s watercress! If you consume 100 kcal of this super leafy vegetable, you cover 100% of the daily nutrient needs studied. According to the study, no other food achieves this.
