Understanding and Managing Endometriosis: Education, Awareness, and Advocacy

2024-02-02 14:20:06

Endometriosis affects one in ten women. Little known and therefore poorly treated, this pathology causes chronic and disabling pelvic pain, particularly during menstruation. These pains are the primary cause of school absenteeism in adolescents and professional absenteeism in young women (source: ameli.fr).

Thanks to associations which carry out important information work, the subject is gradually emerging in the public debate to allow better consideration of this disease by the medical profession. Thus, the Info-endometriose association signed an agreement in 2016 with the Ministry of National Education and Youth in order to raise awareness among middle and high school students, and facilitate the early detection of endometriosis.

A 2020 parliamentary report on menstruation also recommends tackling the subject from sixth grade in order to, in particular, deconstruct the social taboo and dissociate this subject from sexuality education. And, in 2022, the ministry joined forces with the “National strategy to combat endometriosis», whose roadmap sets out the actions to be taken towards young people in schools.
