Overall, the quality of tap water is excellent in France, where 100% of municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants and 98% of the total population receive water of good microbiological quality all year round, as reported by Ministry of Health (2022 data).
Yet, as surveys reveal Consumer Insights, 58% of French people surveyed in 2023 said they regularly drink bottled water (daily or weekly consumption), even though the plastic waste generated harms the environment and bottled water is much more expensive: up to ‘at 100 times more expensive than tap water. In addition, several scientific studies have shown that bottled water represents a significant source of microplastic ingestion by humans, and that it might therefore potentially have harmful effects on health.
As our graph shows, however, the French are far from being the biggest consumers of bottled water in the world. Within the twenty countries covered by the study, it is in Italy, Mexico and Brazil that we find the most regular consumers: between two thirds and three quarters of the population.
