A separate “climate corner” for the Linz city library

The KlimaEck is an approximately 80 m2 area on the first floor of the city library in the knowledge tower and is intended to be a contact point for everyone interested in climate issues. On the one hand, the library gathers its media and materials on the topics of climate protection and sustainability there, and on the other hand, numerous events take place there. “The library wants to network more closely with the climate protection activist scene and bring the issue more to the public,” says Julius Stieber, director of the culture and education division.

The program begins with the Südwind exhibition “Global Perspectives for Climate Justice”, which opens on February 5th and deals with the climate crisis in the Global South. This will be followed by regular climate puzzles, a darning salon at the sewing kitchen on April 5th, workshops on the topic of waste recycling with Linz AG and much more. There are reading hours and bicycle repair workshops for children. During the Long Night of the BibliOÖtheken on April 26th there will be a plant exchange, a repair café information point from the Otelo/Offinne associations and the virtual reality exhibition “Power Playground” from the Energiewende Linz association.

On the first Monday of every month, the climate community also meets at the “Stammtisch” in the KlimaEck at 5 p.m. Anyone interested is warmly invited to take part and join in the discussion. The KlimaEck was financed by project funding from the Linz Climate Fund.

Sustainable offers

Climate City Councilor Eva Schobesberger points to sustainable offers that have been created in the city library in recent years, such as the Dingelei(h), which enables the sharing of objects, the cargo bike rental in five Linz libraries or the digitizable facility, in which everyone can select their own documents can digitize. “With the new ‘KlimaEck’ platform, the city library in the Wissenturm is increasingly becoming a green library,” says Schobesberger.
