The last hours revealed new details regarding the negotiations between Israel and Hamas for a ceasefire and prisoner exchange, and the obstacles that prevent them from being completed.
The American Wall Street Journal wrote: “Participants in the negotiations on the Gaza Strip are discussing a ceasefire for a period of 6 weeks, but following that it will be difficult for Israel to resume fighting with the same force. Israel and Hamas are now considering an agreement under which the release of the hostages will begin.” in Gaza”.
Officials told the newspaper: “A number of serious obstacles make reaching this agreement difficult, but if they are overcome, the agreement can be reached within a week to 10 days.”
Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper confirmed that the Hamas movement is holding on to 3 prisoners to complete the next deal with the Israeli side, and indicated that the three prisoners are Marwan Barghouti, Ahmed Saadat, and Abdullah Barghouti.
The newspaper pointed out that “Marwan Barghouti is considered in the latest opinion poll in the West Bank to be the preferred candidate to head the Authority following President Mahmoud Abbas.”
The newspaper continued: “As for the second prisoner that Hamas insists on, he is Ahmed Saadat, Secretary-General of the Popular Front, who planned to assassinate Minister Rehavam Zaei in 2001, and is considered an important popular figure in Palestinian society, like Barghouti.”
The third prisoner is Abdullah Barghouthi, a member of Hamas, and one of the leaders of the organization’s military wing in the West Bank. He is currently serving a 67-year prison sentence, which is an “unprecedented” sentence in Israel.
Earlier, the Secretary-General of the Islamic Jihad movement, Ziad al-Nakhalah, confirmed that Hamas requires a comprehensive ceasefire to enter into any understandings regarding the Israeli prisoners.
He added: “We will not engage in any understandings without ensuring a comprehensive ceasefire, the withdrawal of the occupation forces, ensuring reconstruction, and a clear political solution that guarantees the rights of the Palestinian people.”
The head of the Hamas Political Bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, affirmed, “The movement is open to discussing any serious and practical initiatives or ideas, provided that they lead to a comprehensive cessation of aggression and securing the shelter process for our people and people.”
The media advisor to the head of the Hamas political bureau, Taher Al-Nono, also announced that the movement wants a “comprehensive ceasefire” in Gaza, following the Qatari mediator touched on a proposal for a temporary truce.
While Ali Baraka, head of the Department of National Relations Abroad in the Hamas movement, said, “Our determinants are the ceasefire, the opening of the Rafah crossing, and an international Arab commitment to the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip and the release of prisoners on the basis of “all for all,” indicating that when the head of the movement’s political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, arrives, To Egypt, he will respond in the name of the factions and not just in the name of “Hamas.”
He stated that “what is proposed is 3 stages for prisoners, the duration of the first stage being 45 days for civilians and the second stage for the military, but without specifying a time period,” indicating that “the third stage is for the exchange of bodies between the two sides, and it is also without specifying a time period.”
