They didn’t even remember the Soviet artist.

Alexandre Dumas’s novel The Three Musketeers is a classic of world literature. The images of the trinity of gallant warriors and their charming leader, the young Gascon D’Artagnan, have become classic. In 2002, the French publication Cahiers du Cinéma decided to find out who played the cult hero best.

To the disappointment of the Russians, Mikhail Boyarsky did not even make it into the top 50: they forgot to take the Soviet star into account among the contenders. Apparently, most French people have never heard of the famous television film by Georgy Yungvald-Khilkevich.

The first place on the list was taken by the legend of French cinema Jean Marais. The artist played D’Artagnan in the 1962 film The Iron Mask. An honorable second place went to the actor from the American “Iron Mask”: the film starring Douglas Fairbanks was filmed almost 100 years ago, in 1929. And finally, Maximilian Schell rounds out the top three: he played the Gascon in the 1960 film “The Three Musketeers.”
