Released on Diwali in 1995, ‘The King’ ran for over 200 days in theaters and became the highest grossing film of that year. Written by Ranji Panicker and directed by Shaji Kailas, Mammootty starred in the film.
Mammootty played the role of District Collector Joseph Alex IAS in this political thriller. Associate director Vasudevan Govindankutty is talking regarding this film in an interview given to Master Bin.
He said that Mammootty had a particular mannerism in The King and that mannerism was decided by the writer, Mammootty and the director. Vasudevan Govindankutty says that it was through that movie that Maruti Gypsy was brought to Kerala for the first time and till then there was no Gypsy in Kerala.
‘The King was a big film. Mammootty had a special mannerism in that film. The mannerism was decided by the writer, Mammootty and the director.
It was through that movie that Maruti Gypsy was brought to Kerala for the first time. There were no gypsies in Kerala then,’ says Vasudevan Govindankutty.
He said in an interview that right from the beginning they felt that the film would be the next milestone and Ranji Panicker did not have the full script at that time.
“Right from the beginning, we felt that the film was going to be the next milestone. Its story was written by Ranji Panicker. Ranji Panicker did not have the full script at that time.
When we were shooting in Madras, he was narrating the script over the phone. I will write down when I call STD. Then the film was shot by preparing a fair copy. A person’s will be a detailed one-line.
It’s almost like reading a scene when people say one-liners. Then the next day, when you tell me which scene you are shooting, the person will tell you exactly what you need and don’t need for that shoot. So even though there was no script, there was no tension there. We know the script will arrive in the morning,’ said Vasudevan Govindankutty.
