After the explosive initial momentum, the market for bendable phones seems to be growing more slowly than expected, and everyone is trying to find the answer to why from the trio of production difficulties, high prices and financial challenges affecting the customer. At the same time, there is a rarely discussed reason that is more obvious in real life than in advertising photos: the thickness of foldable devices. Although the crowd favorite Galaxy Z Flip5 promises a compact experience, if it is open it is too long for one-handed use, at 15 mm, and when it is closed it has to be shoved into the pocket like a rugged phone. And the tablet/phone handyman Z Fold5 is not only bulky at 253 grams, it is also too narrow and squishy when folded. The third way might be the way to go, because the Find N2 can be operated perfectly with one hand when closed and offers a fairly large panel when open, but it is not a thin phone either, and its great size has already gone out of fashion.
So there is also a formal reason why not everyone puts a bendable phone in their basket next to the bread, and it is precisely the form that Magic V2 opens a new chapter with. Honor’s design masterpieces are not only smaller and more airy than the Z Fold5: they offer a larger internal (7.92″) and external panel (6.43″), and although at 156.7 x 74 x 9.9 millimeters and 231 grams, they still it is always quite large when closed, providing two and a half times the screen area of the S24 Ultra.
In addition, the V2 remained the size of a traditional phablet, so that it does not have to give up the three viewing angles on the back at 50 + 20 + 50 megapixels – let’s say the thickness of less than 10 millimeters can be understood without the large hump. It is also true that the above applies to the Magic with its excellent grip and leatherette pattern: the version with a glass back is 0.2 millimeters thicker and 6 grams heavier. With its gap-free closing hinge, the magnesium alloy structure is so strong when closed that you don’t even feel like you’re holding a Transformers-like folding device.
However, when opened, it is shocking that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, all antennas, modems, sensors and components, as well as two batteries with a total capacity of 5000 mAh, fit into the housing. It is also beneficial that a film was pre-glued on each of the two displays, and there was room in the box for the SIM pin, the description, the back case with a fold-out support, and the USB-C cable at both ends. But Honor is now saving money on the adapter, just like the earphones. Without the camera hump, the V2 is only 4.7 millimeters thin, and at 156.7 x 145.4 millimeters it has a sufficiently large tablet OLED panel with 10 bit, 120 Hz and HDR10+ support, just like the exterior.
Where are you, crease pattern? It is interesting that this is still emphasized on Samsung phones, which sell most of the bendable devices in the world, but on Honor’s offer, you have to look for it that way. Of course, it’s easy to find depending on the refraction or by dragging your finger along it, but it’s never confusing. in addition to the low light reflection, staring at the 2156 x 2344 pixels with explosive color and contrast is an expressed experience.

How do we measure the display?
At 7.92″ and with an almost square aspect ratio, I used the screen comfortably with two hands, including typing, and stylus support was also provided with a compatible accessory, although according to our information, this will not be available for purchase in Hungary. And the Honor did well on our light meter: I mightn’t measure a luminance higher than 700 nits in the editorial office, even though the panel is clearly much brighter in sunlight and perfectly visible in all situations.
However, with the Red Magic 9 Pro, it is obvious that the screen is protected by a thicker frame than usual, and the surface covered with a plastic layer is much easier to scratch. This also discourages many people from buying, and of course the bending mechanism is far from being as tough when opened. However, if it is folded in the wrong direction, it takes a serious effort to look for a new phone, when in any case a device must remain in use for 4-5 years for sustainability and financial reasons, there are strong question marks regarding the long-term durability of the entire foldable genre.
That’s why Honor made the key elements of the hinge out of titanium, and the bending mechanism opens and closes quietly with some extra finger gymnastics if you do magic with one hand. I can’t see a gap anywhere where dust might easily get in, but it doesn’t have the waterproof design of the Galaxy Z series, so it should have reached the water-repellent level. The thin and gap-free design, with a 16-megapixel selfie hole inside and out, is also an engineering masterpiece.
The maximum luminance of the external panel with 1060 x 2376 pixels was not properly measured either, but under sunlight it also brightens up to the level of the best top mobile phones, and its 20:9, chunkier aspect ratio is more pleasing to the eye compared to the too narrow Z Fold. For me, the standard is still the 18:9 ratio and 5.92″ Find N2, created for one-handed use, but that phone is one and a half times thicker than the V2, which is easier to use with the right hand than with the left, since they have more curves the corners on this side.
When open, it is on the opposite side, but when closed, the narrow volume control and the power button are close to each other – in the latter, the fingerprint reader operates quickly. The two multimedia speakers are located below and above the external screen, while the Type-C port, the double nanoSIM slot, the two microphones and the infrared are located around the rear camera area.
Design summary: Honor has managed to compress a smartphone and a tablet into the size of a traditional phablet, so that neither in a pocket nor in the hand does it appear thicker than a traditional giant phone, and this may be the entry into the genre for many. If you’re looking to spend HUF 800,000 quickly – the Magic V2 will be available in Hungary from the beginning of February in black and purple, in a 16/512 GB configuration.
