Israeli Artillery Strikes and Air Strikes in Southern Lebanon: Death, Destruction, and Escalating Tensions

Marjayoun, South Lebanon, January 31, 2024 (Xinhua) One person was killed, another was wounded, and several homes were destroyed today (Wednesday) during air strikes and Israeli artillery shelling on towns in the border region of southern Lebanon, according to Lebanese military and medical sources.

Government medical sources in southern Lebanon indicated to Xinhua News Agency that members of the Civil Defense of the Islamic Health Authority transferred to a hospital the body of a person named Mujad Hammoud from the town of Beit Lev in the central sector of southern Lebanon, in addition to a wounded civilian who suffered minor injuries.

She added that a missile was fired by an Israeli march at an ambulance belonging to the Islamic Message Scouts in the middle of the town of Blida in the western sector of the border area, which led to its burning and the escape of several paramedics inside it.

Lebanese military sources confirmed to Xinhua that during the past 24 hours, Israeli marches and warplanes carried out regarding 26 air strikes on 10 towns in the border area in southern Lebanon.

She added that the invading aircraft targeted, with approximately 100 air-to-surface missiles, several civilian homes and bird farms, in addition to forest areas.

These sources counted the complete destruction of 18 homes, damage to regarding 50 homes, and severe damage to 3 bird farms, in addition to damage to the electricity network, which led to the power being cut off from several villages in the central and eastern sectors.

She pointed out that 5 homes were destroyed in the town of Khiam alone, including a 3-story building, without any casualties recorded.

The sources said that the Israeli heavy artillery fired regarding 135 shells, including 40 phosphorus shells, targeting 8 towns in the eastern sector (the town of Kafr Kila alone was targeted with 20 phosphorous shells), 6 towns in the central sector, and 5 towns in the western sector of the border region in southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah indicated in several statements it issued that the Islamic Resistance (its military wing) attacked several Israeli sites, including the Metula settlement site, the Bayad site, the Mitat barracks, the sites of Al-Summaqa, Misqvam, Honin, and the sites of Hanita, Al-Sumqaqa, Al-Alam, and Al-Radar.

In another context, the Independent Lebanese Central News Agency reported to knowledgeable sources in the border region in southern Lebanon that “Barkat Jabour Airport, which belongs to Hezbollah, in the western Bekaa region in eastern Lebanon, has become out of service.”

The agency indicated that on January 25, Israeli aircraft attacked this airport, which is used by the Hezbollah air unit, which is regarding 20 kilometers from the Israeli settlement of Metulla.

She added that the Israeli bombing targeted the stands, which were used to launch marches without a pilot.

She said that the marches launched by the party following bombing the airport are of the type that do not require stands and their payload is limited to a rocket-propelled grenade.

The confrontations on the Lebanese side since last October 8 led to the death of 240 people, including 173 members of Hezbollah, 3 members of the Civil Defense, a soldier from the Lebanese Army, one member each from the Amal Movement and the Syrian Social Nationalist Party, 21 members from the Hamas and Islamic Jihad movements in Lebanon, and 40 civilians, including 3.
