Oil prices have returned to their upward trend since the end of last week. Black gold is above $80 on international markets. Fuel prices in France are also on the same curve. They increased once more this Wednesday, January 31. Will this situation push the government to reconsider its position regarding the fuel allowance?

This Wednesday, oil prices are still in their rising range. Brent is trading at 81,59 USD, while American West Texas Intermediate crude is sold to 76,85 USD. Oil prices are therefore maintaining their high prices in a context of tensions in the Red Sea.

Fuel prices continue to rise

Concerning fuel prices in France, they are also increasing this Wednesday, January 31. The price of diesel (B7) reached 1.79 euros per liter, an increase of 1.40% compared to last week, according to the website carbu.com. Unleaded 98 (E5), for its part, rose to 1.89 euros per liter, recording an increase of 0.50%, according to the same source. For LPG, it is displayed at 0.996 euros. It is the only fuel to see a drop of 0.5% compared to last week. Super 98 (E10), for its part, remained stable at 1.84 euros per liter.

The increase in fuel prices is explained by the surge in oil prices in the face of persistent instability in the Red Sea. Indeed, in addition to the psychosis that the Houthi rebels have sown in this global trade route, leading to additional costs for ships forced to change their route, this attack has revived the threat of a disruption of supplies from the Middle East. East. It thus led to tension on the oil markets.

Fuel prices are therefore expected to increase in the coming days. In addition, some forecasters expect an increase in oil prices in 2024. However, determining their trajectory remains a very difficult exercise due to the instability of the markets, due to exogenous elements that are difficult to control, notably the situation at sea. Red.

Will the fuel check be deployed to relieve motorists?

Faced with this increase in fuel prices combined with the increase in electricity and gas prices, the most vulnerable French people will still be in difficulty, hence the questions regarding putting compensation back on the agenda. fuel. This aid, announced in November 2023 by the government for the start of the current year, will not be activated automatically. Bruno Le Maire explained that this system only concerned moments of crisis. “ It’s a protection device when fuel prices explode “, he had justified.

The activation of the fuel allowance of up to 100 euros, initially planned for January 1, 2024, will only occur in the event of a surge in prices. “ If tomorrow, which I don’t want of course, you have a worsening crisis in the Middle East, oil prices explode and, as a result, you have pump prices approaching 2 euros, I will trigger the worker fuel allowance system », Explained Bruno Le Maire in December 2023.

However, the situation has changed. The French will face several increases at the same time in a context of turmoil on the social level. In this context, the fuel allowance is one of the measures intended to relieve motorists in the face of prices which are approaching the threshold set by the Minister of the Economy.
