The first analyzes of the Apple Vision Pro — by journalists and content creators who received the headset in advance for testing — are being released today. As a result, more details are emerging regarding the device, especially regarding its everyday use.
One of these details is an intriguing limitation: it is not possible rearrange apps on the Home screen from visionOS. As highlighted by 9to5Macat least in the initial version of the system, apps have a fixed order and position, which cannot be adjusted.
The apps are shown in a grid with 13 icons each, and you can navigate between them by dragging your hand. In the first, Apple apps are displayed: TV, Music (Music), Mindfulness (Mindfulness), Settings (Settings), Freeform, Safari, Fotos (Photos), Grades (Notes), App Store, Mail, Messages (Messages) and Keynote. There is also a “Compatible Apps” folder, with apps made for iPadOS installed on the headset.
From the second page onwards, installed third-party apps optimized/native to visionOS are shown. They are organized alphabetically and, as stated, the organization cannot be modified. It is also not possible to create folders other than the Compatible Apps folder, which is added by the system automatically.
Web apps
Furthermore, to date there is no possibility of adding website shortcuts to the Home screen in Safari — unlike iOS/iPadOS — like seen by developer Steve Moser.
In other words, in the case of web apps, it is not possible to insert their icons from the Home screen, and must always access them directly in Safari. The headset also does not support Progressive Web Apps (PWAs), so features like notifications push of sites are not available.
The news is especially negative when we remember that it will only be possible to access services such as Spotify, YouTube e Netflix via the web — since they did not initially announce apps for visionOS. Therefore, there is no way to even add the icon to websites, making it necessary to keep them open in Safari or access the pages whenever desired.
Unless there are specific limitations, it is very likely that these features will be added in future updates — as was made on iPhone OS 1.1.3when it became possible to edit the icons on the iPhone’s Home screen — especially as they are important to ensure a more complete experience for Vision Pro users.
The tendency is for the system to evolve quickly and at a rapid pace.
