New firmware update for AirPods Pro, AirPods 2 and AirPods

2024-01-30 22:02:58

The new firmware version 6A321 is now available for both the AirPods Pro and the standard AirPods 2. The over-ear AirPods Max received firmware version 6A324 with the refresh.

As is almost always the case, Apple does not provide detailed release notes for individual firmware updates beyond mentioning general improvements.

How do I update AirPods firmware?

To update the AirPods firmware, the earbuds or headphones must be connected to an Apple device via Bluetooth while charging.

On an iPhone or iPad, go to the Settings app and select Bluetooth. Tap the “i” icon next to AirPods and check the current firmware version in the About section.

On a Mac, choose Apple Menu > System Information. Click Bluetooth and search for the AirPods firmware version.

The new firmware is automatically installed over-the-air as long as the AirPods are charged.

AirPods Pro 2 offer new feature

The firmware update comes just ahead of the launch of Apple’s new mixed reality headset, Reality Pro, on February 2, 2024.

Interestingly, the AirPods Pro 2 earbuds with USB-C charging have a unique capability when paired with Reality Pro – the ability to play lossless audio. This is thanks to a new Bluetooth audio codec that is used between the Reality Pro headset and the AirPods Pro 2. This doesn’t work with the Lightning AirPods Pro 2.

Apple touts the Reality Pro as the only mixed reality headset on the market that offers lossless sound when paired with the compatible AirPods Pro 2. This positions the headset as a premium device aimed at early adopters who are willing to pay a high price.
