Companies importing gasoline, diesel and gas issued a statement in which they said: “In addition to our previous explanatory statement dated, in which we confirmed that oil companies did not benefit from the support, but rather the Lebanese consumer exclusively, the proposal to impose a fine or an exceptional tax on companies that imported subsidized goods, and considering it as… It is the one that benefited from the support provided by the Bank of Lebanon during the crisis in 2020 and 2021. It was proposed from outside the draft budget law prepared by the Finance Committee, and it was not originally included in the draft budget sent by the government.
She added: “It seems that the aforementioned proposal came in haste and was not accompanied by any study or feasibility. We made the necessary reviews and deliberated with those concerned, but the positions were not up to the responsibility.”
She believed that “approving the exceptional fine or tax will lead to the destruction and elimination of the import sector. Also, imposing large sums of money will have a negative impact on companies’ activity and their dealings with banks and suppliers, and will lead to the inability to import.”
Accordingly, and since the importing companies were keen on the interest of their country and paid all kinds of taxes unlike others, and they continued in the most difficult circumstances to secure the import and distribution of vital gasoline, diesel and gas materials and meet the needs of the market and the Lebanese consumer, and since the hasty measure according to the current formula for issuing it would lead the companies to forcibly stop Importing and perhaps stumbling, God forbid, in which case the impact will be negative on the livelihood of tens of thousands of families who benefit directly and indirectly from the sustainability of the oil sector in Lebanon.
Therefore, the companies decided the following:
1- Stop delivering gasoline, diesel and gas starting tomorrow morning.
2- Later stop importing when the stock runs out, if no solutions are found, as a warning measure until the matter is resolved, with companies then preparing to reopen their doors and secure quantities for the local market even during Sundays.”
