Toprak Razgatlioglu Sets New Superbike World Championship Record in Portimao Winter Tests

It was not expected that Jonathan Rea’s pole record (1:39.610 min) from 2022 would be beaten by over 4/10 of a second in these winter tests. But the conditions on the south coast of Portugal were excellent; at 20 degrees Celsius, it was neither too warm nor too cold.

Toprak Razgatlioglu was exceptionally fast on all tires on the BMW M1000RR: with hard racing tires (SC0), with soft racing tires (SCX) and also with the qualifier. After four days of testing in Jerez and Portimao, the ROKiT team only had one qualifier left, with whom the 39-time race winner clocked 1:39.189 minutes.

“I might have driven 1:38 minutes,” emphasized Toprak to SPEEDWEEK.com. “We had too much grip with the qualifier for our set-up. The bike bounced at corner exit when I accelerated and I had chattering at corner entry. And I had a lot of wheelies, so I only managed 1:39.1 minutes. I also achieved incredible lap times with the SCX and SC0. My times in the racing simulation were also excellent, I’m very happy.”

The Turk tried two different swings, but described them as “very similar”. He has therefore not yet decided which one he would like to continue working with.

“We were very strong in Portimao, but it’s difficult to say how we will fare on Phillip Island,” reflected Razgatlioglu. “The track there is completely different, you need more grip. And it got new asphalt. I can’t even say which tire we will use there, the SC1 or the SC0. If we had a race in Portimao now it looks like we would win – my pace is very strong. But I also know that we have to improve our grip on the rear wheel and our turning.”

The 2024 World Championship begins on Phillip Island in three weeks, followed by two days of testing on the same route.
