Violence in Antwerp Prison: The Case of Ringo De Witte

The reason ? New acts of violence occurred last year in the Antwerp prison in which he was incarcerated. On February 19, 2023, Ringo De Witte attacked two goalkeepers, even trying to gouge out the eye of one of them. Ultimately, the miraculous intervention of other members of the prison service made it possible to avoid the worst. But this case still ended up in court earlier this year.

If Ringo De Witte’s lawyer declared that his client “acknowledged the facts” and “admitted to having lost his temper at the guards”, he recalled that he was now in a “safe place” at the Forensic Psychiatric Center de Ghent, a closed establishment for people who have committed a criminal offense in which their psychiatric disorder played a role.

For his part, the prosecutor called for the internment of Ringo De Witte. “It’s a good signal to give to the guards, it shows that we are moving forward on this issue,” he said.

Finally, this Tuesday, the Antwerp court ruled and followed the prosecutor’s request, namely internment. “The facts are serious and demonstrate a particularly aggressive disposition and a lack of respect for his neighbor,” added the court.

Note that this is already the fourth time that Ringo De Witte will be interned. It must be said that in prison, the man has a rather heavy history, hence his nickname “the most dangerous prisoner in the country”. Over the 28 years he has already spent behind bars, he has been aggressive on multiple occasions. In particular, he punched the doctor at Hasselt prison and violently attacked several guards at Limburg prison. He was also the one who attacked Kim De Gelder, known for having murdered two babies and a childcare worker in a daycare center in Dendermonde in 2009. Ringo De Witte is in fact known for not supporting child killers, which also earns him a certain sympathy from the other inmates.
