there is nothing to discuss about NATO membership anymore

The Swedish Prime Minister said on TV4 on Friday that he would like to visit Budapest to discuss various matters, but first he will have a meeting with Viktor Orbán in Brussels, “where we can start the discussions”. About his possible visit to Budapest, he said that

you need to find an appointment, we usually don’t take care of such things in a hurry. I think both of our calendars are very busy.

According to the Swedish Prime Minister, Sweden and Hungary have many matters to discuss, but they have nothing to discuss regarding Sweden’s NATO membership.

There is nothing to discuss regarding NATO membership anymore. On the other hand, we can discuss, for example, how we can best cooperate as NATO members

– said Ulf Kristersson.

The Swedish Prime Minister said that Sweden will not make any new promises regarding NATO. “There are no demands related to NATO membership on the agenda,” he said. However, the two countries can discuss many things, including cooperation within NATO, the future Hungarian EU presidency, support for Ukraine or how to get the most out of the fact that the two countries’ air forces use the same fighter, the Swedish JAS Gripen.

Kristersson would not predict exactly when his country would become the defense alliance’s 32nd member, but said it would be “expected very soon.”

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced on the social media site X that he spoke by phone with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, whom he confirmed that the Hungarian government supports Sweden’s NATO accession. The prime minister added that they are urging the parliament to vote on Sweden’s accession and to ratify the decision on the country’s admission. As is well known, the Turkish parliament approved Stockholm’s admission to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization on Tuesday

accession requires only the decision of the Hungarian legislature.

The Hungarian government has already indicated several times in the past that it supports Sweden’s admission to NATO, but the Parliament has not yet made a positive decision on the matter.
