“Federal Nuclear Regulation” discusses regulatory activities at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant

The Board of Directors of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation held its first meeting for the year 2024, where it reviewed the latest developments at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, the Authority’s financial statement for 2023, in addition to the latest developments regarding its research and development program.
The Board of Directors was briefed on the oversight activities that the Authority intends to implement this year at the Barakah station in accordance with the annual inspection plan for the year 2024.
Activities include inspections that will be conducted in units one, two and three of the nuclear power plant, supervision of the qualification program for reactor operators, which is managed by Nawah Energy Company, as well as various tests being conducted in unit four at Barakah.
Council members also reviewed the latest developments in the Authority’s research and development program, which relates to conducting specialized research projects such as reactor materials, waste management, radiation safety infrastructure, and others.
Research projects are implemented in cooperation with various national and international partners. The research and development program aims to support the regulatory framework and attract Emiratis to join the sector by providing research opportunities, as well as promoting scientific activities such as publishing research papers and participating in technical conferences.
The Board of Directors discussed the latest preparations for the Professional Day campaign for workers in the nuclear and radiation sector, which the Council of Ministers agreed to celebrate on February 16 of each year.
The celebration of this day marks the anniversary of the issuance of the license to operate the first unit of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in February 2020. The professional day aims to celebrate the efforts of professionals who contributed to the success of the nuclear and radiation sectors in the United Arab Emirates.
