Fabian Seha: The Reality of Farming in Court-Saint-Etienne, Walloon Brabant

2024-01-29 19:36:00

Known to viewers for having participated in L’Amour est dans le pré on RTL-TVI in 2021, Fabian Seha, a farmer in Court-Saint-Etienne in Walloon Brabant, also went to demonstrate with the farmers this Monday following- noon. “We went near Quatre-Bras de Baisy-Thy,” he tells us.

The man who works on the family farm which includes 350 cows wishes, like his colleagues, to express his anger. “The paperwork has become unmanageable. My father takes more than three days a week for everything administrative. Every time we have to give medication to a calf, we have to fill out paperwork,” explains Fabian, who no longer counts his working hours. “At the time, my grandfather finished his days at 5 p.m. and did not work on weekends. We work 7 days a week. And to get there, the farm is no longer enough. We have to have other activities on the side. The financial aspect has become truly catastrophic.”

What he wants is to send a message to politicians. “New laws are always imposed on us. To go to the fields, we have dates to respect but it doesn’t work like that. We have to work according to the weather.”

The farmer wouldn’t change his job though. “I am part of the fifth generation of farmers in the family. So I don’t do this for the money. I don’t want to leave everything but it’s true that it’s getting difficult.”
