Born in 1983, Prince Ernst August Jr is the eldest son of the fiery Prince Ernst August of Hanover, husband of Princess Caroline of Monaco, and his first wife Chantal Hochuli. He is also the godson of King Felipe of Spain, the latter’s maternal grandmother, Queen Frederika of Greece, having been born Princess of Hanover.
It was in 2016, following six years of relationship, that the prince married Ekaterina Malysheya in Hanover. Born in 1986 in Apatity, Russia, she then grew up in the Czech Republic. It was in London where she completed her studies and where she began fashion design that she met the hereditary prince of Hanover working in the banking sector.
She created her brand EKAT which offers one-piece clothing called “catsuits” that are worn close to the body. During their wedding, Prince Ernst August Sr. was conspicuous by his absence. He is in fact in conflict with his son to whom he had entrusted the management of the family assets.
Aware of the heavy maintenance burden on the family castles, Prince Ernst August Jr signed an agreement with the state of Lower Saxony which bought the Marienburg castle from him for the symbolic euro. The prince also held the auction of various historical objects. What followed was a trial where Ernst August senior demanded to once once more take control of the family foundation managing their assets. At the end of a bitter battle in court, the prince did not win his case.
Prince Ernst August and Princess Ekaterina already have three children: Elisabeth, Welf August and Eleonore born in 2018, 2019 and 2021 respectively. The princely family lives in Hanover. The children do not know their paternal grandfather who has broken off all contact.
The children of Prince Ernst August, on the other hand, maintain relationships with Andrea, Charlotte and Pierre Casiraghi, whom they met when their parents were in a relationship. Despite the separation, Princess Caroline of Monaco has always ensured that the extended siblings maintain close contact, being all linked by their half-sister Princess Alexandra of Hanover.
If the turbulent Prince of Hanover no longer speaks to his eldest, he is on very good terms with his other son Prince Christian. He has lived in Madrid for many years. He is married to the wealthy Peruvian heiress Alessandra de Osma. The couple is expecting their third child following twins Nicolas and Sofia. Prince Ernst August now resides for a large part of the year in the Spanish capital where his girlfriend Claudia Stilianopoulos lives. It is not uncommon to see the Prince of Hanover with his grandchildren Nicolas and Sofia playing in Retiro Park.
His births will perhaps finally bring serenity and reconciliation to the Hanoverians…
