55 dogs, cats and rabbits were taken from a breeder in Gilgenberg last year, the OÖN reported. They found shelter at the Lochner Pfotenhilfe, but there is no permanent space for the animals. But they were not allowed to be rehomed: they still belonged to the breeder.
“The conditions were truly shocking and pitiful. 27 of the 29 cats were locked together in a neighbor’s attic, which was completely covered in feces, where only large chunks of dry dog food and frozen water were found. The dogs were in old crates and containers without heating in double-digit temperatures below zero locked up,” reports Pfotenhilfe managing director Johanna Stadler.
“Excessive procedures”
She criticizes the “excessive process” with all the consequences for the animals: the dogs were not allowed to be castrated and had to be separated according to gender. This caused additional effort and space, and sometimes also health problems. Stadler is happy that at least the ownership has been clarified – the animals are officially no longer the property of the breeder and can be rehomed almost a year later (including the dogs following castration).
