New Next-Gen CarPlay Features and Apps Coming in iOS 17.4

Originally presented at WWDC22, it was expected that the next generation of CarPlay debuted in the first vehicles sometime last year — and, although some manufacturers have already released previews of how they will implement the new system, no model compatible with it has actually been launched yet.

Now Apple updated your CarPlay page (in the United States, that is) with the information that the first vehicles are expected this year, as seen by staff MacRumors and previously announced by some automakers.

Furthermore, the first beta version of iOS 17.4released yesterday, also brought more clues regarding what to expect from the next generation of Apple’s vehicle system, including new applications and features.

NEW: Apple has confirmed that the first U.S. vehicle models to support next-generation CarPlay will launch in 2024, as Aston Martin previously said.
The iOS 17.4 beta revealed 8 new apps for CarPlay: Auto Settings, Car Camera, Charging, Weather, Locks, Media, Tire Pressure, and Trips.

More precisely, the new apps are related to the fact that the next generation of CarPlay will further integrate with the car’s native functions. Therefore, these apps will allow you to configure vehicle preferences and features.

Are they:

• Automatic settings: Allows you to manage paired iPhones and adjust vehicle settings.
• car camera: will show the image from the vehicle’s rear (and/or front) camera.
• Charge: For electric vehicles, this app will display the battery level, charging status, time remaining until the battery is fully charged, among others.
• Climate: Will provide access to the vehicle’s temperature controls, including the air conditioning or heating system, wind speed, heated seats, heated steering wheel, and more.
• Closings: will show if any of the vehicle doors are opened and may also display vehicle alert symbols.
• Media: Will provide access to radio station controls in CarPlay, as well as other media options such as SiriusXM.
• Tire pressure: will display the air pressure for each of the vehicle’s tires and provide low pressure, high pressure and flat tire warnings.
• Trips: It will provide a variety of driving-related data, such as the vehicle’s average speed, fuel efficiency or energy efficiency, total elapsed time and distance covered in a trip, among others.

Here are 7 apps coming to CarPlay 2.0 found in iOS 17.4:

It was also identified, in the iOS 17.4 beta, that the new CarPlay will display a “Goodbye” screen (“Goodbye”) — similar to the greeting “Hello” (“Hello”) that already exists on several Apple devices — following the driver turns off the vehicle. Likewise, the system “confirms” that users will be able to adjust the theme and color scheme of the new CarPlay, including the appearance of the instrument panel.

With CarPlay 2.0, when you turn off the car, there will be a “Goodbye” image shown on the screen.
Similar to the famous “Hello” shown below.

Apple has not indicated whether any features of the new CarPlay will be available for the current generation of the system. Furthermore, it may be that the final version of iOS 17.4, expected in March, will bring even more details regarding these new features.
