After EDGUY has now been on hold for ten years because Tobi is moving around AVANTASIA doesn’t matter, it was actually only a matter of time before the other members showed up somewhere. Drummer Felix Bohnke plays live with Sammet, Tobias Exxel recently joined THE UNITY and now guitarist Jens Ludwig is also there THE GRANDMASTER at the start, while there is currently no trace of colleague Dirk Sauer in the metal landscape.
However, this band is not entirely new, as the debut “Skywards” was released in 2021 together with Frontiers Records house and court keyboardist Alessandro Del Vecchio (among others ARCHON ANGEL, SUNSTORM), Drummer Mirko DeMaio (MIND KEY) and singer Nando Fernandes (SINISTRA). The result was a decent melodic power metal album, the successor of which now shows a huge improvement with a new singer in the form of Per Johansson (FATE, UREAS).
Power Metal somewhere between German power and Scandinavian playfulness, which shines with dark undertones and a dense atmosphere. Above all, Per can set accents here, he sounds like an aggressive, highly motivated Jorn Lande in his prime. That’s why, but also thanks to the slightly dark side, the strong keys and the crisp riffs MASTERPLAN would like to think regarding it. Even if you don’t immediately recognize who is playing the guitar, EDGUY stands out subtly in many a melody, solo or lead, which also comes across as positive and likeable.
And so there is a full service of melodic power metal with everything that goes with it. Fast bangers, pleasant stompers, anthemic choruses, numerous hooks, delicate melodies and furious solos – it’s all there! In addition to numerous catchy tunes and hit candidates, there is “Fly, Icarus Fly,” a tear-jerking piano ballad in which Per can show off his full range and shine.
THE GRANDMASTER is a must for both EDGUY and MASTERPLAN fans. But in general, Jens Ludwig and his colleagues deliver a hot contender for the power metal album of the year!
