[임자 건강칼럼] The trigger of diabetes is lack of calcium – Gyeongbuk Newspaper

Insulin, which causes diabetes, is produced and secreted by the β-cells of the islets of Langelhans in the pancreas. In autoimmunity, antibodies that are supposed to kill pathogens invading from the outside mistakenly infect the body’s own β-cells. attack. For this reason, when β cells are damaged, insulin is not produced. (It is said that the virus can attack β cells directly.) Diabetes that occurs when insulin is not produced is called insulin-dependent diabetes, and is often seen in children and young people. On the other hand, non-dependent diabetes is prevalent in adults, especially those who gain weight following middle age, and this accounts for the majority of diabetes. This indicates that the insulin-secreting β-cell cannot immediately follow the command to secrete insulin from glucose (i.e., the information is not transmitted correctly). For pancreatic β cells to receive a signal and feel that they must make insulin, they first start by pulling glucose into the cells. Next, glucose increases ATP (Adenosine Three Phosphate) within the cell, and with that force, the gateway to introduce potassium (K) into the cell opens, causing a current to flow through the cell membrane, and this time calcium (Ca) enters the cell. The increase in calcium within the cell plays a critical role in packaging insulin and exporting it out of the cell. Therefore, when calcium does not enter the cell, or when there is a lot of calcium inside the cell, the calcium signal is not transmitted and insulin is not secreted. This is the same as when there is a lack of calcium. When there is a lack of calcium, parathyroid hormone is released to dissolve calcium from the bones, and the extra calcium enters the β cells. And it interferes with the transmission of information to secrete insulin to β cells. Also, in the case of people who are deficient in calcium due to kidney failure, which means kidney function is reduced, active vitamin D cannot be made, and calcium cannot be absorbed from the intestines, parathyroid hormone in the blood increases, and calcium in β cells increases. This increases. This shows that there is a close relationship between parathyroid hormone and increasing calcium in β cells. Another thing that reduces insulin secretion is a lack of vitamin D. Active vitamin D itself also plays an important role in insulin secretion, and if it is lacking, insulin is not produced well. In this case, when vitamin D is supplemented, insulin secretion returns to its original state. Insulin is secreted, but the lack of action of insulin can often be seen in cases where the reception of insulin when it acts on cells is not sufficient. For example, if too much calcium enters muscles or fat, it becomes difficult for insulin to work. This also happens because the method of transmitting information deteriorates because intracellular calcium has increased due to calcium deficiency. Have you ever heard of ‘Syndrome X’ or the Death Quartet? The four symptoms of abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, hyperlipidemia, and insulin resistance (insulin not functioning sufficiently) are used to mean that life-threatening diseases such as myocardial infarction or cerebral infarction are likely to be the cause. One of the evidence is that non-insulin-dependent diabetes is especially common in people who gain weight following middle age. Obesity is defined as having too much weight compared to height, that is, being overweight. To be precise, it means that there is a lot of fat in the body. The extra calories are stored in the cells as fat and the fat cells themselves become larger. However, this is also related to the overlap of fat cell response errors to information, and if calcium enters fat cells due to calcium deficiency, such errors may occur. Obesity is also due to calcium deficiency. So, if you consume enough calcium, you can prevent the quartet of deaths. The world is a mess. All people develop mild, non-dependent diabetes as they age, and diabetes can be said to be a type of aging phenomenon. As we age, we become increasingly deficient in calcium, and at the same time, calcium begins to dissolve from the rice plant, and at the same time, excess calcium enters all cells and cell function deteriorates. If we think of aging as a result, diabetes is also a metabolic manifestation of aging. Professor Makoto Osannai, a Japanese neuroscientist at Tohoku University, surprised many people when he announced on Japan’s Shintai TV that “the brain does not function without calcium.” I don’t know if it’s just my foolish thinking, but hasn’t the brain in Korea really lost calcium? The Republic of Korea is falling into a serious crisis to the point where there are doubts. Will we really be able to survive the 21st century?
