Taking advantage of the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris 2024, Seine-Saint-Denis has increased the development of new pools in recent years to compensate for a significant deficiency in aquatic structures. Among the projects undertaken, that of Sevran stands out for the integration within the future complex of one of the pools used as part of the Games.
PFor Seine-Saint-Denis, the Paris 2024 Games will constitute a very unique event, the candidacy and organizational preparations having led to the establishment of several important projects, whether for urban regeneration, with the construction of the Athletes’ Village and the Media Village, transport, with new metro lines which must open their doors in the dynamics of the Games, but also for sports infrastructures, with aquatic equipment at the forefront.
In fact, in a department that is among the most deficient in France in this area – where moreover almost one in two children entering secondary school does not know how to swim – the arrival of the Games has caused an unprecedented commitment to build or renovate basins.
As proof, Seine-Saint-Denis will have some 39 pools by the end of the year, thanks in particular to the creation of three pools for the Olympic Aquatic Center in Saint-Denis, the installation of five basins for the center of Marvillebut still two pools on the Fort d’Aubervilliers sitewithout forgetting the five basins of theOdyssey in Aulnay-sous-Boisor the renovation of a pool at the Stade Nautique Maurice Thorez in Montreuil.
More generally, the Ile-de-France department will benefit – because of the Games – from the construction of four new aquatic centers, whose flagship will be none other than the Olympic Aquatic Center opposite the Stade de France.
Moreover, of the three basins created for this new infrastructure with innovative architecturetwo will remain on site, while the 50-meter training pool can be relocated later in whole or in part depending on territorial or organizational needs by the supplier Myrtha Pools.
In the same spirit, while two 50-meter pools must be arranged from mid-May 2024 in the heart of the Paris La Défense Arena of Nanterre (Hauts-de-Seine), the material heritage of the Games will be fully demonstrated at the end of the sporting event when the organizers, the public authorities and the aforementioned supplier will operate on the reuse of the structures.
Thus, a first 50 meter pool will be raised by half in Bagnolet under the leadership of the Territorial Public Establishment, Est Ensemble, Myrtha Pools retaining in fact the property of the other party. At the same time, the second pool temporarily located in Nanterre for the swimming events and for the final phases of the water polo tournament will be dismantled and then installed near Sevran.
This scheme here meets the requirements of organizers and authorities to maximize inheritance possibilities, even if the territorial distribution has been reviewed and corrected since the Call for Expressions of Interest (AMI) formulated by Paris 2024 to the Communities of Seine-Saint-Denis.
In October 2021, the Games Organizing Committee (COJO) had announced that four cities in the department would be concerned by sharing the three pools inherited from the Games.
At the time, Sevran and Bagnolet were already on the map. This was also the case for Montfermeil, which should have received a 50-meter pool following the Games, and for Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, through the Territorial Public Establishment, Plaine Commune, with in this specific case, a 25 meter pool.
Ultimately, new political orientations or financial constraints did not make it possible to fully realize this approach.
For the municipality of Sevran, the contribution of one of the Olympic pools will indeed intervene and will even be carried out around a larger project aimed at rethinking the current swimming pool designed in the mid-1970s in the wake of the operation “1,000 swimming pools” – with the famous swimming pools Sunflower – which was decided in France following the mixed results of the 1968 Mexico Games.
Because beyond simply renovating the aging swimming pool, the City of Sevran will undertake a construction site that will ensure in fine a tripling of the surface area of the existing site according to the plans of the agency BVL Architecture.
In detail, the current 25-meter pool offering a difference in height of 1 to 2.10 meters will constitute the exterior marker of the future aquatic complex, the whole being intended to be surrounded by a green space which will notably include 2,000 m² of lawns and dozens of trees and shrubs, as well as a snack area.
Inside, the construction site – for which the first stone will be laid this Wednesday, January 24, 2024 – will lead to the installation of the 50-meter Olympic pool from next October, following an arrival by exceptional convoy which promises to arouse keen interest.
The swimming pool will then have a depth of 2 meters and 10 swimming lanes, with a movable floor to ensure the holding of various and varied activities simultaneously.
In addition to this major structure topped by a spectator area with a capacity of 200 seats, the Sevran aquatic complex will also be equipped with a wellness and fitness area, including hammam, sauna, jacuzzi, cold bath, massage jets and other training machines.

To successfully complete this logistical challenge and this promising project for the region and its inhabitants, a general investment of 26 million euros will be necessary.
Funded at this stage at almost 70%, with the assistance of the State, the Departmental Council of Seine-Saint-Denis, the Greater Paris Metropolis, the Olympic Works Delivery Company (SOLIDEO) and the National Sports Agency (ANS), the project will include 3 million euros for the program Legacyor precisely the announced reuse of the 50-meter Olympic pool.
Finally, note that for the entire project, the City of Sevran has committed to mobilizing some 9 million euros alone, demonstrating its desire to provide the site with flagship equipment for learning and the practice of swimming among schools and the general public, knowing that the implementation of this ambition has been decided following the abandonment of a controversial artificial wave project.
