South Korea’s Food Ministry urged people not to eat fried toothpicks, following TikTok users shared videos of themselves doing so, according to the network.“CBS News” American.

Once fried, the toothpicks — made from sweet potato or cornstarch — resemble thin French fries, but are bright green.

These types of toothpicks, which are seen as environmentally friendly and biodegradable, are often found on the tables of Korean restaurants, and can also be used to eat foods that are usually eaten with the hands.

The clips showing people eating these foods received thousands of likes and shares on social media, with some of them saying that they fried them following mixing them with spices and liquid cheese.

In a post on the “X” platform, the South Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety confirmed that “the safety of toothpicks has not been verified in terms of their edibility.”

The ministry added: “Please do not eat it.”

According to local media, an ingredient called “sorbitol” is used in the manufacture of these sticks, and although it is harmless when consumed in small quantities, it can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and some infections, if consumed excessively.

Online eating shows in South Korea called mukbang are very popular and often depict people eating large amounts of food or unusual cuisine.
