Turning to a used Volkswagen Passat firstly means choosing among the many generations. According to no, the 7th is a good compromise.

Like its little sister Golf, there was a time when the Volkswagen Passat was a must-have in its category, in this case among family cars. Renewed a few months ago for a ninth generation, only as a station wagon, it is one of the oldest names in the VW range. But this prestigious pedigree is still in trouble. As proof, in 2023, the German only attracted 1,660 customers in France, including 79 individuals! Suffice it to say, a drop of water. Forgotten when new, the Passat nonetheless remains an excellent used road car. With 8 generations sold, suffice to say that there are thousands of models available. For a reasonable budget, we recommend the seventh generation, marketed between 2010 and 2014. Prices start around €8,000 and from €10,000, the mileage gives you time to see what happens.

In this Passat, if the habitability has not changed, all the practical aspects have greatly improved compared to the previous generation. The comfort is real and the soundproofing careful. But to appreciate it at its true value, it is better to opt for the most powerful engines. Indeed, the 1.4 TSI and 1.6 TDI only offer weak boosts, and the latter is rumbling during acceleration phases. On certain versions, the braking is not the most satisfactory either. Finally, it’s difficult not to point out the interior presentation, almost directly inherited from the 2005 Passat. Still, behind the wheel, this Volkswagen delights with its sure-footed chassis and precise steering.. In town, with its imposing size, the Passat is obviously not the most comfortable. The SW station wagon offers an impressive loading volume (up to 1,731 dm3) and is available in an Alltrack adventure version.

  • The problems experienced by the 2005 Passat seem to have been eradicated. However, we note some clogged FAPs and EGR valves which give up the ghost on the TDIs, as well as faulty injectors.
  • DSG gearbox: Still cases of malfunction at the start of marketing
  • Automatic parking brake: Sometimes impossible to release (models 201 to 2015)
  • Air conditioning: Inoperative. Delphi compressor to replace
  • Clutch: Malfunctions with six-speed manual transmission

We will regret the somewhat sluggish restarts.Engine1.4 TSI 160Power160 hpOur remarksThis more alert version is almost impossible to find in the classified ads.Engine1.8 TSI 160Power160 hpOur remarksExtremely rare, this 1.8 does not lack pleasure: it is efficient, flexible and quite sober.Engine2.0 TSI 210Power210 hpOur remarks210 horsepower in a family car is good. But the market has been resistant to it for a long time.Engine3.6 FSIPower300 hpOur remarksSmooth and powerful, this V6 goes down well with the Passat. Still, consumption is soaring. Engine 1.6 TDI 105 Power 105 hp Our remarks This little 1.6 is not unworthy. It is only at the level of restarts that it admits its weaknesses. Engine 2.0 TDI 140 Power 140 hp Our remarks The ideal diesel engine for the Passat. Discreet, it takes the Volkswagen along with ease. Engine 2.0 TDI 170/177 Power 170/177 hp Our remarks Why not opt for the 170/177 hp versions of the 2.0 TDI? It’s not much more expensive.
