Exploring the Blockbuster Master Gareth Edwards at the 2024 Gérardmer Film Festival

One of the masters of the blockbuster, behind Rogue One and Godzilla, sets down his bags in Gérardmer. The 31st International Fantastic Film Festival, which runs until January 28, 2024 in the Vosges, pays tribute to British director Gareth Edwards.

He is a genius of images and special effects. On Friday January 26, 2024, at the start of the followingnoon, pop culture fans invaded Gérardmer (Vosges) to attend the tribute and masterclass by British director Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla, Rogue One : A Star Wars Story et The Creator), as part of the 31st edition of the International Fantasy Film Festival.

Born in 1975, Gareth Edwards has known he wanted to direct films since childhood. His career began in the early 2000s, following studying cinema, especially in the docufiction sector. In 2010, he signed his first feature film, Monsterscritically acclaimed. “I was already 35 when I made my first film, which means very late compared to other directors. Fortunately, I read that Ridley Scott had released his first film at 40, that reassured me”quips the filmmaker.

The doors of Hollywood then opened to him. Gareth Edwards is chosen by Warner Bros to stage a big budget production, a reboot of Godzilla (2014). His third film is none other than the extremely famous Rogue One : A Star Wars Story (2016), the first spin-off of the franchise. “I am a huge Star Wars fan. I saw Star Wars (George Lucas, 1977) at the age of two. During the promotion of Rogue One, George Lucas called me to congratulate me, it was a big moment for me,” rejoices the Briton.

Between gigantism and special effects, Gareth Edwards’ films are as ambitious as they are spectacular. When it comes to talking regarding his references, the forty-year-old is inexhaustible. “I saw Reservoir Dogs seven times at the cinema. I’m a fan of Quentin Tarantino, he’s a hero to me. Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Martin Scorsese and James Cameron are also sources of inspiration. They are incredible directors, I grew up with their extraordinary images,” smiles this moviegoer.

At 48, the filmmaker is on the rise. Writing, directing, photography and even special effects, the versatility of Gareth Edwards no longer needs to be proven. In 2023 he wrote and directed The Creatorhis fourth feature film, shot in natural settings once morest a backdrop of war between humans and artificial intelligence.
