Less than two weeks following a successful gala in Quebec, Eye of the Tiger Management (EOTTM) does it once more with another evening of boxing at the Montreal Casino on Thursday evening.
Laval resident Erik Bazinyan (31-0, 22 KOs) will put his NABF super middleweight title (175 lbs) on the line once morest Argentinian Billi Facundo Godoy (41-7, 20 KOs) . The WBA Continental title, currently vacant, will also be at stake.
For Bazinyan, it’s first and foremost regarding staying active while waiting for an opportunity to present itself once morest a boxer classified in this category where there is little movement. But he must be careful once morest an experienced opponent who might set him back in the event of a defeat.
The 28-year-old boxer is currently 2e in the WBA rankings, 3e to that of the WBC and the WBO and 5e to that of the IBF. He finds himself in the same situation as Christian Mbilli, another EOTTM protégé, who is also awaiting a fight once morest an opponent better ranked than him. At the top, Canelo Alvarez blocks the category, he who is the reigning champion of the four federations.
Another belt
Another belt will be at stake during this evening of eight fights. The Ukrainian by origin and Montrealer by adoption Artur Ziyatdinov (15-1, 12 KOs) and the Venezuelan Albert Ramirez (17-0, 15 KOs) will face each other for the WBA International title light heavyweight (175 lbs), which is currently vacant.
This is a nice order for Ziyatdinov since Ramirez, a protégé of EOTTM, currently occupies the 4e rank of the WBA. A victory Thursday night would allow him to attract attention.
The same goes for the spectacular Steven Claggett (37-7-2, 25 KOs), who will face the Mexican Marcos Gonzalez Barraza (23-3, 11 KOs) in a fight among the super-light (142 lbs).
Claggett is riding an eight-fight winning streak, his last coming via decision over Miguel Madueno last November. The Calgary boxer then offered a solid performance in a difficult fight once morest an opponent who was known to be tough.
Spencer and redemption
After seven consecutive victories to begin her professional career, the Ontarian Mary Spencer (7-2, 5 KOs) came up once morest the Belgian Femke Hermans (18-4, 7 KOs) twice in the world championship. -O.).
The last time was last October in a majority decision loss. This one hurt because Spencer failed in her attempt to wrest the IBF super-middleweight world championship belt (154 lbs) from Hermans, who also got his hands on the vacant IBF title.
Spencer therefore intends to find the path to victory once morest the American Sonya Dreiling (6-3, 2 KOs), an opponent who is certainly within her reach.
A defeat for the 39-year-old Ontarian would certainly come with a good reflection on the rest of her career.
Quick return
Only 12 days following winning at the Videotron Center in Quebec, Wilkens Mathieu (6-0, 3 KOs) and Moreno Fendero (3-0, 2 KOs) will be back in action.
The first will face the Mexican Oscar Soto Quintana (6-4) in a super-middleweight fight (175 lbs) and the second will face the Mexican Ricardo Lara (22-11-2, 10 KOs), also at super-middleweight.
In either case, this return to the arena is rapid, but not surprising. They did very well in Quebec and are on the rise.
On January 13, Mathieu defeated the Mexican Jose Arias Alvarez (3-2, 1 KO) by unanimous decision while Fendero beat Victor Hugo Flores (7-3, 3 KOs) by K .-O. technique from the first round.
Two other boxers from the EOTTM stable will be in action during this gala. Jhon Orobio (5-0, 5 KOs) will face Mexican Juan Carlos Ramirez Garcia (5-4) in the lightweight category (135 lbs) while Avery Martin Duval (10-0-1, 6 K. -O.) will battle it out with Mexican Jesus Gomez Adorno (6-0, 2 KOs) in the super featherweight category (130 lbs). The Quebecer, however, missed the weight by posting 131.9 lb during the weigh-in on Wednesday noon. The fight will still take place.
