LOS ANGELES – After the closure of the Nicaraguan consulate in the city of Los Angeles, Nicaraguans in California and the entire west coast of the United States were left without consular representation.
Now they will have to travel to places as far away as Miami, Washington DC or New York to carry out their procedures.
Users only found a notice on the door of that office, which was located in Koreatown, announcing the closure on January 19, and the options they now have to complete their procedures.
“All of us who live in this country, who are from other countries, need a consulate. It is very important and it is regrettable that this has happened,” said Nicaraguan Julia Alfahum.
Dr. Rafael Cárcamo, representative of the Nicaraguan Global Diaspora, indicated that the attitude of the Nicaraguan government is not correct.
“It is isolating, it is radicalizing. He is doing the same thing they do in Cuba, in Venezuela,” said Cárcamo. “What these governments do is make life more difficult for their compatriots, especially those of us outside,” he added.
Cárcamo is a member of a Nicaraguan organization that criticizes the government of Daniel Ortega. They are also fighting for Nicaraguans to be allowed to vote abroad.
“The reason is political,” said Cárcamo. “There is no justification that they say. (That) there is not much internal movement in the consulate to keep the consulates open, that is not true,” he added.
TELEMUNDO 52 tried to contact the Nicaraguan consulate in other states, but they did not respond to emails or calls.
