A 28-year-old woman surnamed Lou in Changchun City, Jilin Province, mainland China, was hit by a brick thrown by a man surnamed Zhou while walking through a snack street last year. She was pronounced dead following rescue efforts. After Zhou Nan was arrested, he confessed that he wanted to die but did not dare to jump off the building, so he threw bricks at people, hoping to be sentenced to death. After hearing the case, the Changchun Intermediate People’s Court sentenced Zhou Nan to death in the first trial.
According to the People’s Daily, a Chinese media outlet, the Changchun City Procuratorate accused Zhou Nan of being world-weary and socially hostile because he was unable to support himself, so he planned to kill unspecified people on the ground by repeatedly throwing bricks and other objects from high-rise buildings. Life; On the evening of June 22, 2023, Zhou Nan threw 8 bricks at the crowd on the ground from the 32nd floor, one of which hit a 28-year-old woman surnamed Lou.
The Changchun Municipal Procuratorate pointed out that before this, Zhou Nan had poured 2 barrels of bottled water and 3 unopened cans of Coke out of the window on June 17, 2023, causing injuries to two passers-by.
According to forensic identification, Lou died of severe craniocerebral injury caused by being hit on the head with a blunt instrument. As for Mr. Zhou’s psychiatric evaluation, the report showed that he was not mentally ill at the time of the case and was fully capable of criminal responsibility. It is understood that following Zhou Nan arrived at the case, he confessed, “I didn’t dare to jump off the building if I wanted to die, so I threw bricks and hit people to death, hoping to be sentenced to death.”
After a trial by the Changchun Intermediate People’s Court, the judge sentenced Zhou Nan to death, deprived him of political rights for life, and compensated the victim’s family for funeral expenses and other expenses of 40,000 yuan (approximately NT$176,000).
Regarding the outcome of the trial, the deceased’s sister said that she wanted to thank the judiciary for giving her sister fairness and justice. However, her sister’s life might not be saved, and her family was deeply affected by it. Her mother was in very poor health due to her sister’s death and needed to be bedridden. Sad things should never have happened.
