Good elementary education, sufficient childcare places and MINT education as a lever for a future with equal opportunities
Vienna (OTS) – “A good degree – especially in MINT subjects – statistically improves not only job opportunities, but also earning potential,” explains Julia Aichhorn, federal chairwoman of the industry. “In addition, and I notice this every day in our company, our international customers value the great know-how of our companies and their workforce. We absolutely have to maintain that because it is our competitive advantage.”
“And it starts with our little ones,” Aichhorn continued. “We finally need a legal right to high-quality childcare from the age of one.” That would have several advantages. On the one hand, it would bring equal opportunities for all educational levels and the overall level of education would be massively raised, because the earlier you invest in education, the more likely you are to get a good degree later. In addition, mothers would finally have their deserved chance to get back into work earlier. “Child education and care are an enormous lever for the location. Politicians must not continue to fail to invest heavily here.”
“Especially in the MINT area, we need to do more across all school levels,” explains Aichhorn in conclusion. “While artificial intelligence is increasingly finding its way into everyday life and the professional world, girls in particular often lose interest in technology over the course of their educational careers. This is devastating for our role models and Austria as a location. To put it bluntly, we are leaving out the potential of 50% of the population.” Recent studies have shown that in the early years there is equal interest in technology among all genders. “Children are born researchers, and we have to ensure that it stays that way as they get older. Especially since technical professions are incredibly exciting and have a lot of impact (keyword: climate protection), they also offer higher earning potential.”
