More than 140 families have expressed an interest in adopting one of the 30 little Quebec orphans who have serious needs and who cannot find a loving home, since the broadcast of the report Journal last Saturday.

“It’s incredible, it doesn’t stop!” reacts Danielle Piché, the general director of the Emmanuel Association, whose mission is to have these children who have no family adopted. We’re all excited.”

Last Saturday, The newspaper reported that 30 Quebec children who have severe special needs (autism, physical disability, developmental delay, etc.) are unable to be adopted.

This is a record for at least 10 years, and they are on average four years old. Some are even young babies. The reasons behind abandonments are numerous: drug addiction, mental health problems, parental incapacity, etc.

In the meantime, they are all under the legal custody of the Director of Youth Protection (DYP), throughout Quebec. They live in hospitals, rehabilitation centers or with foster families.

People interested

In just five days, at least 144 families have contacted the Association, and 92 information session kits have been downloaded.

“People want information,” notes Ms. Piché, whose team is very busy with the flood of calls. I didn’t expect so many results.”

In recent months, the Emmanuel Association had even started putting children’s profiles on social networks, in the hope of finding them a family.

Obviously, interested people must go through an entire legal process to be eligible, which can take several months. But according to Ms. Piché, it is clear that several children will find a family, following this massive addition of potential candidates.

“We have to look at the profile of families and children. But, it can go very quickly if they have been accredited by the DPJ,” she specifies.

Great progress

Furthermore, families who adopted these children have testified to the great progress they have made in a stimulating and loving environment.

Please note that the Association aims for permanent adoptions, we are not looking for temporary foster families.
