Their bilateral meetings have become rare since the start of the war between kyiv and Moscow. Federal Councilor Ignazio Cassis discussed the World Peace Summit in Ukraine with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday in New York.

“This meeting was aimed at establishing a dialogue” to assess which path is possible with Moscow, the head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) told the press in the evening. “We are at the start of these exploratory discussions”, following Switzerland committed last week to organizing the Summit desired by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Mr. Cassis repeats that “the positions are diametrically different” between the two parties. The Ukrainian peace plan brings together conditions that are unacceptable for Moscow and those of Russia would not be unacceptable for kyiv either.

Since the start of the war, the Russian position has not changed, adds the federal councilor. “Russia sees its country over 100 years,” he said, remaining convinced, however, that President Vladimir Putin will be ready to discuss when conditions allow.

The two ministers met for the first time in New York since September 2022. “So far everything is going well,” said Sergei Lavrov, while the head of Swiss diplomacy asked him how he was, according to images from the Russian Foreign Ministry on social networks.

Last week, Moscow rejected the scenario of a World Peace Summit in Ukraine. Berne is “on the side of the law”, retorted the President of the Confederation Viola Amherd following these reproaches.

In an interview on Monday with the American channel CBS, Sergei Lavrov estimated that Moscow was ready to listen to those who do not use Ukraine for a war once morest Russia. In New York, the head of Russian diplomacy has met several counterparts since Monday, including that of Turkey, a country which has worked as an intermediary since the start of the war. He exchanged a few hugs with him.
