Like any other, the brain is a muscle that needs maintenance. However, the brain is not really a muscle like any other: the seat of reflection, memory, emotions, reasoning, motor coordination… the good brain health conditions many aspects of our lives! And to take care of it, it also comes down to the plate…
Brain, memory…and cheese!
Eating cheese is good for your health. Certainly. But while we can easily imagine the benefits of calcium intake for bone health, we are not necessarily aware of the benefits that cheese can have on the brain. And yet! A study – published in the scientific journal Nutrients -, was interested in the link between cheese consumption and (good) cognitive health. What comes out of it? People who eat cheese are less likely to have cognitive disorders. A conclusion reached by Japanese researchers by looking at the decline in cognitive functions in people (1,500 adults over 65).
To explain these promising results, Japanese scientists put forward several hypotheses:
1/ Cheese consumers have a more varied diet
More than the cheese itself, it is the fact that people who eat cheese have a more diversified diet than those who do not eat it which might explain the good cognitive health of the former. “Subjects consuming cheese had a dietary habit of consuming a wide variety of foods rather than the specific nutrients contained in cheese”is thus one of the hypotheses put forward by Science.
2/ Cheese nutrients are beneficial for the brain
Although less supported without being ruled out, this is the other hypothesis that can explain an inverse association between cheese consumption and the reduction in cognitive functions.
Cheese, a superfood for the brain?
This is not the first time that Science has been interested in the links between the memory capacities of the brain and cheese. In 2020, Auriel Willette, author of a study on the subject, noted that “regardless of how we performed the analyzes or what covariates we included, cheese is the only food that was associated not only with maintaining cognition over a 6-10 year period, but also, in in some cases, to a real improvement in cognition” … Enough to encourage researchers to continue their work to understand all the complexity of the links between cheese and the brain…
