  • sorae – NASA Mars helicopter photographs jettisoned parachute and backshell during landing

[Reposted/Reedited]This is the “Back shell and parachute thrown away when the Mars rover “Perseverance” arrived on Mars“is. This photo was taken by NASA’s Mars helicopter “Ingenuity” on April 19, 2022.

This image is one of a total of 10 taken during Ingenuity’s 26th flight, which was designed to photograph the backshell and parachute following it was jettisoned.

The backshell crashed into the Martian surface at a speed of regarding 126km/h, causing severe damage and debris scattered around it, but the surface coating “appears to be intact” even following entering the atmosphere.

Additionally, although only one-third of the parachute is visible due to the dust covering it, there appears to be no sign of damage from the supersonic air currents that blown the parachute during deployment.

It is hoped that this valuable information obtained from the images taken by Ingenuity will be utilized in future missions, including the Mars sample return mission.
