The Tyrolean Chamber of Labor election from January 29th to February 8th is a fight between six – sometimes more, sometimes less strong – “Davids” once morest one “Goliath”. The latter is the black Labor Chamber president and occasional ÖVP “rebel” Erwin Zangerl, who with his “AAB-FCG” list currently represents 45 of the 70 chamber councilors and has to defend 61.4 percent from the last ballot in 2019. The overwhelming favorites are challenged by, among other things, a red, blue and green list.
More precisely, these are the “FSG Tirol – Faction of Social Democratic Trade Unionists” with top candidate Bernhard Höfler (2019: 19.7 percent/14 seats), the “FPÖ – the social home party / FPÖ” (2019: 8.7 percent/six mandates) with frontman, state party general secretary and state parliament member Patrick Haslwanter and “Together – Greens in the AK & AUGE/UG (2019: 7.1 percent/five mandates) with top candidate Daniela Weissenbacher. These three – in addition to Zangerl – List – regarding mandates in the Tyrolean AK general assembly consisting of the chamber councilors. The ballot is completed by “PFG – your non-party interest group”, the “Communist List / KL” and the “Trade Union Left / GL”.
After the 2019 election, Zangerl’s list continued to include all three vice presidents and another four board members in addition to the president. The FSG remained represented on the board with two members. The Freedom Party won a mandate, the Greens left the committee.
The election campaign has been relatively quiet so far, with frontal attacks by the challengers on the all-powerful Zangerl, who has headed the AK since 2008, largely absent – including from the FPÖ, which in earlier times loudly campaigned once morest the supposed and actual “privileges” of chamber leaders. The candidates largely agreed on the issues and demands on politicians.
The 66-year-old political fox Zangerl is standing for the last time in the election, as he had announced. The election is tailored entirely to the AK state prince. A brief “Der Erwin” (with “Er” colored in black) in red letters is emblazoned on the numerous Zangerl election posters across the country. The AK boss has been preparing for the election campaign for a long time without campaigning in the traditional way. By biting into the state-owned energy supplier Tiwag because of its pricing and corporate policies, even suing the state company and thus seemingly driving his party friends in the state government and the state opposition (most recently with the demand for a Tiwag-U committee) ahead of him. The AK president as a supposed publicity-conscious “Robin Hood” and party rebel – a ball that Zangerl took over from his predecessor Fritz Dinkhauser and also perfected.
The black man stated that his election goal was to “maintain” the result from 2019. Some of his three main challengers want to make significant gains, as they have stated. Above all, the Greens should get back on the AK board.
It will be interesting to see how high the voter turnout is this time. In 2019 it had fallen to a dramatically low 33.6 percent.
The approximately 285,000 eligible voters or members decide on the composition of the general assembly of the Tyrolean Chamber of Labor. The general assembly then elects the president, the vice-presidents, the board and the control committee.
