The African Development Bank (AfDB) announced on January 19 the return of its international staff to Ethiopia, one month following their consecutive departure has the attack on two of its employees in Addis Ababa by security forces.
The ADB “received a formal apology from the Prime minister on behalf of the Ethiopian government with firm guarantees regarding the safety and security of its personnel,” it said in a statement.
Ces excuses follow a meeting at the end of December in Addis Ababa between the head of the AfDB, the Nigerian Akinwumi Adesina, and the Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
Assault
On December 20, the AfDB withdrew its international staff from Ethiopia following claiming that two of its employees had been attacked by Ethiopian security forces. The organization explained that the two employees had been “illegally arrested, physically assaulted and detained for several hours par elements of the security forces without official explanation”, October 31.
The ADB does not specify the identity of the victims but diplomatic sources at Addis Abeba had indicated that one of them was his director in Ethiopia Abdul Kamara, also deputy director general for East Africa, who had quits the country following the incident.
22 projects
On January 19, the AfDB said it was “delighted and reassured” by “the firm commitment shown by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed” allowing to break the “impasse following the incident”.
As of September 30, its investments in Ethiopia represented $1.24 billion, spread across 22 projects.
