Titans agree to hire Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan as their new coach

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Titans have reached an agreement to hire Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan as their new head coach, a person with knowledge of the matter told The Associated Press. decision on Monday.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been finalized.

Callahan takes over for Mike Vrabel, who was fired Jan. 9 following six seasons.

Callahan, 39, had a virtual meeting with Tennessee on Jan. 12, the first of 10 candidates to speak with the team. The Titans interviewed Callahan in person on Monday and decided to hire him, the person said.

The NFL had not allowed in-person interviews of current employees until Monday, the day following the divisional round of the playoffs.

Callahan becomes the third head coach hired this month. The Patriots promoted Jerod Mayo to replace Bill Belichick and the Raiders removed the interim coach tag from Antonio Pierce.

With 14 years of NFL experience, Callahan was the Bengals’ offensive coordinator since 2019 and is credited with part of the development of quarterback Joe Burrow. He will now have the opportunity to work with Will Levis, the quarterback Tennessee selected 33rd overall in April of last year.

Callahan was with the Bengals when they upset the AFC’s top-ranked Titans in the playoffs following the 2021 season. Cincinnati was on track to reach the Super Bowl, where it lost to the Los Angeles Rams.

The son of former Raiders coach Bill Callahan, he was one of the leading candidates in the hiring cycle. He also had several interviews last year before deciding to stay in Cincinnati. This month he was also interviewed by the Los Angeles Chargers.
