Inter Milan won the Italian Super Cup for the third consecutive year by beating Naples 1-0 on Monday in Riyadh.
Argentinian Inter captain Lautaro Martinez scored the only goal of the match in added time (90+1).
Napoli, reigning Italian champions already behind in the race for their own succession, were reduced to ten men following the hour mark following the exclusion of Giovanni Simeone.
Since the creation of the Italian Super Cup in 1988, Inter are the second team to win it three times in a row. Until then, only AC Milan, crowned in 1992, 1993 and 1994, had achieved such a three-goal run.
Inter coach Simone Inzaghi also made history in the event: he became the most successful coach with a fifth trophy (two won with Lazio in 2017 and 2019 and three with Inter in 2022, 2023 and 2024).
He overtook two legends of Italian football, Fabio Capello and Marcello Lippi, who won four editions of the ‘Supercoppa italiana’. For his part, Yann Sommer won his first trophy with the Interists.
Before the second half kicked off, players from both teams observed a minute’s silence in memory of another Italian football legend, Gigi Riva, who died at the age of 79.
